The Benefits of Second Generation Disk-based Backup Technology

The Benefits of Second Generation Disk-based Backup Technology

Abstract: As disk prices are falling, backup to disk has become a reality. However, many organizations quickly find that without compression and data deduplication that the amount of disk required to maintain backup retention is cost prohibitive.

Over the past couple years, first generation disk-based backup systems with data deduplication technology have alleviated some of the challenges associated with backing up to disk, but these systems have their challenges as well. Newer, second-generation systems improve upon disk-based backup with deduplication and eliminate the challenges of the 1st generation systems.

Overcoming the Challenges of Tape with a Disk-Based Backup Solution

Overcoming the Challenges of Tape with a Disk-Based Backup Solution

Abstract: All organizations use tape to back up data nightly. Tape is fairly inexpensive and low-tech, but managing and administering tape, backing up to tape and restoring files from it can be time consuming, unreliable and complex. Disk has always been an easier, more reliable alternative, but until recently its high acquisition cost has made it untouchable for many organizations. Fortunately, new disk and data reduction technologies have recently converged to make disk-based backup available at about the same price of tape backup systems. This white paper examines the pros and cons of both technologies and will present a cost analysis of ExaGrid’s disk-based backup system with data deduplication and compression vs. tape and standard SATA disk.

Comparing ExaGrid's Byte-Level Data Deduplication to Block Level Data Deduplication

Marc Crespi | VP, Product Management, ExaGrid Systems

Abstract: Though data deduplication technologies have been around for years, there is a renewed focus on them recently as they are being utilized by products in the disk-based backup market. Data deduplication enables disk to be a feasible long-term retention backup media -- making it the same or lower cost than tape-based systems.
